How a Virtual Tripwire Works

This article in our series on “An Introduction To Video Analytics,” highlights virtual tripwires, also known as cross line detection. A tripwire application detects moving objects that cross a virtual line making it possible to automatically trigger an event. Depending on your requirements the tripwire analytics software can be a function of the security camera or centralized on a server, DVR or NVR. You can establish a virtual tripwire with reliable results in these areas:

– entrances and/or exits
– gates
– pathways
– corridors
– loading docks
– parking lots
– driveways

If the tripwire in any of these areas is crossed an alarm is triggered, notifying you of the event so you can take the required action. An alarm is not triggered when people move near the tripwire, only when the line is crossed.

Limitations that need to be taken into account before you install:

– using security cameras that are subject to excessive vibration
– weather conditions (rain, snow)
– excessive lighting
– if a person or an object moves too slow or too fast through tripwire

AXIS Cross Line Detection

Cross-Line-Detector-AxisAXIS Cross Line Detection is an optional tripwire application that can be installed on their cameras or encoders (edge). It’s simple to install and configure. The user defines

– the lines (segments) needed to establish the tripwire
– object direction, one way or two way
– when the event is to be active, e.g. Sunday through Sunday from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m.
– what event should be triggered when the line is crossed: text messsage; email images

Retail Video Analytics Highlights:

This article in our series of articles on Video Analytics applications is Retail Video Analytics. Over the years, retailers have used video surveillance as a deterrence to theft, but with today’s video analytics technology retailers can extract operational intelligence data for multiple benefits:

Retail Safety and Security

Intelligent features such as motion detection and active tampering alarms mean that numerous stores can be monitored simultaneously from a single location.

Loss Prevention

retail-sweetheartingVideo and transaction receipts can be displayed alongside one another so you can easily verify if goods are being scanned correctly.

Merchandising and Operations

Retail video analytics makes it easier to extract the information you need and boost your merchandising and operations’ performance. Some of the many benefits:

– Gauge customer interest in new promotional displays
– Automatic alerts to let you know of long lines and for staff to restock empty shelves
– Reports on visitor trends (in, out, time of day, traffic patterns)

Video analytics use algorithms to examine video feeds and can be configured to meet your specific security or business needs. In order to be notified of an event or capture useful data, you need to tell the video analytics software what you want the system to analyze and what you want the system to disregard. This is done when you use an object filter. An object filter is the filtering of objects (people, vehicles, objects) that meet certain characteristics. Depending on which video analytics product you work with, filtering can be inclusive or exclusive of objects.

Inclusive Object Filter

In the previous two articles, we looked at license plate recognition and video analytics for retail. These applications are designed to let you filter specific items to yield the results that you want. For instance, when you configure license plate recognition software to filter for vehicles that are red, the software will provide you with video feeds that contain a red vehicle.

In retail, you can configure video analytics to show you how many people stopped to look at a display. In addition to people counting, using a dwell filter with time limits will provide you with this information.

Exclusive Object Filter

In order to minimize false alarms, object filtering is used for objects or conditions that should be excluded, such as rain, snow and wind, trees, flags, shadows…

Making the Best Use of Your Surveillance Video

There are a multitude of video analytics object filters that can be combined to produce the desired results. Whether inclusive or exclusive, many object filters fall into these categories: color, direction, motion, size, speed and time.

Let’s take a look at each and how a combination of two or more factors can create specific detection rules for schools, multi-dwelling / multi-tenant units and a retail environment.

Video Analytics for Schools

Receive real-time alerts when any of these conditions are detected:

People Running: people running could indicate running from a problem area or someone being pursued. (MOTION)
People Entering: unauthorized access to a secured area (MOTION; DIRECTION; SIZE)
People Dwelling: exceeding a people count and time limit could indicate a problem area (MOTION; TIME)
Vehicle Speed: vehicle(s) exceeding school ground speed limits put students, staff and faculty at risk (MOTION; DIRECTION; SPEED)
Vehicle Entering: unauthorized vehicle entrance (MOTION; DIRECTION)
Item Removed: unauthorized removal of an item from a defined area (MOTION)

Video Analytics for Apartment and Office Complexes (MDU / MTU)

Receive real-time alerts or quickly search for pre-recorded events of:

People Entering: quickly view all people entering a building during a set period of time (MOTION; DIRECTION)
People Dwelling: exceeding a people count and time limit could indicate a problem area (MOTION; TIME)
Camera Tampering: detects incidents that disturb the security camera’s performance (MOTION; DIRECTION; TIME)
Vehicle Speed: vehicle(s) exceeding parking area speed limits put tenants and visitors at risk (MOTION; DIRECTION; SPEED)
Vehicle Color: quickly search through video feeds for a specific vehicle color (MOTION; DIRECTION; COLOR)

Video Analytics for Retail

Review automated reports & easily access pre-recorded events of:

People Entering: quantity and time of people entering the store (MOTION; DIRECTION)
People Exiting: quantity and time of people exiting the store (MOTION; DIRECTION)
People Dwelling: exceeding a people count and time limit could indicate interest in a particular store display (MOTION; TIME)

Object filtering allows you to fine tune your video analytics enabling a quicker response time and quicker access to video evidence. These are simple examples of the object filtering capability of video analytics. We can help you to define what object filters would work best in your environment.

License Plate Recognition Privacy Controversy

The use of license plate recognition by law enforcement may give some the impression that any application of this technology puts privacy at risk; however, there are non-controversial uses for this technology that are beneficial. Moving beyond the license plate recognition privacy controversy:

How License Plate Recognition Works

License plate recognition software detects license plates captured on surveillance cameras and links the license plate number with the recorded video. The license plate data is automatically compared to pre-configured lists. Lists can be categorized for those vehicles that you allow access (positive) and those vehicles that are not permitted access (negative).

Automatic License Plate Recognition Optimizes Tasks

When a certain license plate is detected, LPR can send a notification letting you quickly take action. You can also use your preconfigured lists to trigger specific actions, saving you time by automating tasks. License plate recognition software can be integrated with third party access control systems. For instance, after being recognized by the LPR software, a gate can be raised automatically for authorized vehicles and an alarm can be generated based on unauthorized access to a parking area.

License plate recognition is a very effective tool for numerous applications including parking permit control, vehicle inventory, parking lot security and access control, gas station drive-offs and more.

Loss Prevention

Here are some articles written on suggested and actual methodologies used to reduce shrink.

Proactive Loss Prevention

It’s good news that retail theft rates have decreased. However, shrinkage is still a multi-billion dollar problem. The University of Florida, in collaboration with the National Retail Federation (NFR), conducted a National Retail Security survey earlier this year, which concluded that employee theft, shoplifting, administrative errors and supplier fraud in 2011 was $34.5 billion worldwide. Employee theft and shoplifting combined represents almost 80% of the problem.

An article in Security Today, written by Wayne Jared, states that shrinkage in the US is estimated at $15 billion, an “enormous margin eater”.

The article offers suggestions on taking a proactive approach to loss prevention: Consider solutions that identify theft in real time and that use video analytics combined with security footage and office systems to harness business intelligence. Creating operational efficiencies is another approach to taking proactive steps to minimize shrinkage. Analyzing day-to-day operations provides store owners with the opportunity to effect positive changes on profits.

“There’s no business too small to find the best techniques to reduce shrink”

In the NFR’s blog, Retail’s BIG Blog, Tony Fontana writes about loss prevention experts sharing their consensus on the best methodologies they used to battle shrinkage with minimal resources. They agree that they find the methodologies they used to battle shrinkage involve: detailed suggestions on exception-based reporting, employee surveys on sales and operational procedures, training and education, unique approaches, and “breeding a culture of honesty.”

How do your methods to reduce shrink compare?

Occasionally your local news channel will air a story about a crime and show related security camera footage so grainy and blurry that it’s almost impossible to recognize the perpetrators. Yet, TV crime shows, like CSI, have been presenting crystal clear forensic video in court scenes for over a decade. Which is closer to reality?

With today’s IP video surveillance technology, grainy, blurry images are becoming a thing of the past. High definition video is possible, and police departments are able to use video more successfully to apprehend criminal suspects. High-quality video such as HDTV is a great help when investigating crime:

“… Before, the technology was grainy, and when you got stills, you did not get a good, clear picture,” he said. “Now the stills are high quality digital images.”  “…video, if it’s of high quality and clear, can be very useful in trial as evidence.” Bill Kirk, Eagle Tribune

Yet, although a majority of businesses use security cameras, forensic video analysts are still faced with poor quality video, making it difficult to tie a criminal to a crime. Grainy surveillance video images can be the result of using an older technology surveillance system, or using a low-cost camera system of poor quality, or, improper installation and configuration of the latest technologies. Do you need to consider a better alternative for your business?

Explore the advancements in IP surveillance with a free consultation. At Security Camera Systems New England, we design video surveillance solutions and provide video surveillance installation services with all the features you require. We understand the challenge of knowing when, where and how to deploy and configure the latest in IP video technology – and the proper deployment can make all the difference in making forensic video more reliable. The
